Blockheads: singing, another POV
This one, from an iPad on the fireplace. TY Sandra Prow for capturing this moment.
Two days ago, I shared a frantic video that captured the moment when the piece “Blockhead” became a song with vocals. It was unplanned, unpredictable, and in retrospect: inevitable.
Here is that same moment from another POV, this time captured on Sandra Prow’s iPad from the fireplace mantel. This version shows more directly how this formerly-instrumental piece evolved into a song with a chorus sung (eventually a cappella, with the Am, F, Dm, C chord changes!) by everyone in the room.
Here is Sandra’s description that accompanies her video:
“Other than the song itself, everything is entirely improvised. I was just cooking dinner, man.”
Guitars/Vocals: Steve Ball, Jaxie Binder, Paul Richards, Carl Germain, Chris Gibson
Glissentar: Nigel Gavin
Vocals: Sandra Prow, Aileen Bunch, Petra Haden, Sonya Wilson (and everyone)
Solo vocal: Amy Denio
Violin: Nora Germain, Petra Haden
This was the first day of our workshop, focused on repertoire exploration, improvisation and preparation for a show that was booked at the Chapel in Seattle for Wednesday evening.
Principle: if you want a team to focus, book a show. Ideally w 48 hours of lead time.
If you’re reading in your car, or in the shower: feel free to sing along. At the top of your lungs. The lyrics are easy to remember: “Block - Head (repeat)”
Note: the lyrics are a direct reminder (and naming) of who we are when we forget to let go, follow the muse and have fun.
